Halalt Sewage Treatment and Solar Innovation project: Honouring Tradition, Protecting Nature, Growing Power

In the community of Halalt, on Vancouver Island, First Power will help to design a solar aquatic system that uses plants to treat sewage and produce nutrient rich water that supports agricultural production.

It is an ideal use of appropriate technology to address multiple issues facing the community – improved sewage treatment that protects the water aquifer and the traditional shellfish harvesting, new jobs that align with Halalt values, and economic development that benefits the entire community.

“The Halalt people are stewards of the water and we take that role very seriously. We want to treat our sewage using solar technology that is in line with what we’ve been taught. We don’t want to be part of a problem or part of a pollution process. We are in the 21st century so we have to evolve and use technology that is going to benefit everybody at the end of the day. This will set a powerful example.”
